The current or “conventional” paradigm for producing process energy in a biorefinery processing cellulosic biomass is on‐site energy recovery through combustion of residual solids and biogas generated by the process. Excess electricity is then exported, resulting in large greenhouse gas (GHG) credits. However, this approach will cause lifecycle GHG emissions of biofuels to increase as more renewable energy sources (wind, solar, etc.) participate in grid‐electricity generation, and the GHG credits from displacing fossil fuel decrease. To overcome this drawback, a decentralized (depot‐based) biorefinery can be integrated with a coal‐fired power plant near a large urban area. In an integrated, decentralized, depot‐based biorefinery (IDB), the residual solids are co‐fired with coal either in the adjacent power plant or in coal‐fired boilers elsewhere to displace coal. An IDB system does not rely on indirect GHG credits through grid‐electricity displacement. In an IDB system, biogas from the wastewater treatment facility is also upgraded to biomethane and used as a transportation biofuel. The GHG savings per unit of cropland in the IDB systems (2.7–2.9 MgCO2/ha) are 1.5–1.6 fold greater than those in a conventional centralized system (1.7–1.8 MgCO2/ha). Importantly, the biofuel selling price in the IDBs is lower by 28–30 cents per gasoline‐equivalent liter than in the conventional centralized system. Furthermore, the total capital investment per annual biofuel volume in the IDB is much lower (by ~80%) than that in the conventional centralized system. Therefore, utilization of biomethane and residual solids in the IDB systems leads to much lower biofuel selling prices and significantly greater GHG savings per unit of cropland participating in the biorefinery system compared to the conventional centralized biorefineries.  相似文献

We studied the spatial patterns of seedlings and seeds in isolated Picconia excelsa (Oleaceae) trees in the laurel forest of Anaga, Tenerife (Canary Islands). By finding isolated trees we assessed the correlation of seed and seedling bank traits and parent trees by removing the confounding effects of proximity (<100 m radius) of conspecific fruiting trees. We counted all the seedlings per age (height) class within its parental range, and sampled the seed number along transects departing from beneath the parent canopy at regular intervals. We mapped all seedlings per age class and plotted seed and seedling profiles in relation to distance to parent trees. Older Picconia seedlings tended to clump significantly further from parent trees than younger seedlings, which clumped just beneath the parents. We found significant differences among distances to parent tree in numbers of seedlings per age class. The seedling bank area was significantly correlated with maximum distance of seedlings to parent trees. The majority of seeds were deposited within the first 4 m below the parent crown. Seedlings amount at further distances from the trees is larger than seeds/fruits as counted on the ground. Our results suggest that disseminated, older seedlings have occupied germination sites far from the parent tree because there is probably lower seedling–seedling and parent–seedling competition for resources, and perhaps no intraspecific allelopathy and predation/disease.  相似文献

Corporate decision-makers have increasingly adopted an approach to firm governance that places share value above other concerns, including meeting the needs of employees. Decision-makers' concerns about shareholder interests may potentially impede internal commitments to implementing diversity-friendly practices and policies. This study analyses how recognition for a company's diversity efforts impacts corporate share price. We rely on data of share price fluctuation following the receipt of Fortune Magazine's ‘Best Companies for Minorities’ Award. We find that companies recognized for their diversity efforts are penalized with a significant decline in share price, though this negative effect is mediated by the ethnic composition of the company's workforce.  相似文献

遮荫作为树冠对辐射截留的集中表现,与林下环境,特别是光环境特征具有密切关系.为满足坡地人工林下作物、中药栽培环境模拟、预测和控制的理论需要,以圆锥形树冠为研究对象,借助几何光学中光的直线传播原理,根据水平投影与坡面投影的亲似对应关系,在坡平面直角坐标系内讨论树冠的坡面投影形状、确定投影关键点坐标,在测树因子、经纬度、坡度、坡向、时间(包括时刻和日期)等变化要素基础上建立坡面投影理论边界模型Z(x′,y′)=0.经模拟验证,各时刻实测与计算阴影边界曲线相关系数大于等于0.928、显著水平(P)均达到0.01,表明该模型可较精确地描述正圆锥的坡面投影.在此基础上,进行模型的实用检验和分析,选择北半球中纬度单株樟子松,计算得到5月12日8:00~14:00树木遮荫影响最远到达东0.69倍树高、西1.18倍树高、南0.2倍树高、北0.4倍树高,绝大多数阴影位于近似扇环的区域内,计算结果符合北半球太阳视运动规律且实际观测结果与计算值之间相关系数为0.983(P=0.008),证明该模型适用于树冠的遮荫分析,并可能在邻体遮光干扰的进一步研究中发挥作用.最后讨论该模型的优点及局限性,明确模型在实际研究中合理运用的条件.  相似文献

Heterochromatin protein 1 (HP1) binds to the nucleosome via a methylated lysine residue 9 of histone H3 which is catalyzed by a histone methyltransferase such as SUV39H1. Although co-localization of HP1 and SUV39H1 has been evident in immunostaining and immunoprecipitation experiments, direct protein-protein interactions have remained to be characterized. We examined interactions between mouse HP1 alpha (mHP1 alpha) and SUV39H1 in yeast and in vitro. A yeast two-hybrid and a glutathione S-transferase pull-down study indicated that the chromo shadow domain of mHP1 alpha directly interacts with the N-terminal 39 amino acid stretch of SUV39H1. The IY165/168EE mutation in the chromo shadow domain of mHP1 alpha abrogated a self-interaction and this mutant did not interact with SUV39H1. The 13-mer peptide containing a consensus sequence for binding to the dimer surface formed by the chromo shadow domains inhibited interaction between mHP1 alpha and SUV39H1. It seems that self-interaction through the chromo shadow domain of HP1 is crucial for recruitment of SUV39H1 onto nucleosomes.  相似文献

Heterochromatin protein 1 (HP1) is one of the nonhistone chromosomal components tightly associated with the pericentromeric heterochromatic region in Drosophila. The human homologue of HP1 is recognized by a subpopulation of anti-centromere antibodies (ACA). Such autoantibodies recognize a group of several nuclear proteins with Mr of 23–25 kDa and have been termed anti-chromo antibodies (AChA) because an evolutionarily conserved N-terminal half called the chromo domain of HP1 is the epitope. In this study, 84 ACA sera were examined by immunoblotting with recombinant 25-kDa chromo protein (p25). The p25 antigen was expressed as a glutathione S-transferase-fusion protein in E. coli and purified with glutathione-sepharose. Except for one serum specimen, AChA-positive sera reacted with the N-terminus (a.a 16–106) and/or the C-terminus (a.a. 83–191) of p25. Autoimmune response against the N-terminus of p25 in 33 patients was significantly associated with systemic lupus erythematosus and significantly related to leukopenia, thrombocytopenia and elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate; C-terminal reactivity in 30 patients was significantly associated with primary Sjogren's syndrome and related to leukopenia. The internal 64-amino acid stretch (a.a. 43–106) with DNA-binding activity was not autoantigenic. p25 has two separate homologous regions to Drosophila HP1 at the N- and C-termini; the chromo domain and the chromo shadow domain. A long-standing challenge in studies of seed dispersal by animal frugivores has been the characterization of the spatial relationships between dispersed seeds and the maternal plants, i.e. the seed shadow. The difficulties to track unambiguously the origin of frugivore-dispersed seeds in natural communities has been considered an unavoidable limitation of the research field and precluded a robust analysis of the direct consequences of zoochory. Here we report that the multilocus genotype at simple sequence repeat (SSR; microsatellite) loci of the woody endocarp, a tissue of maternal origin, provides an unequivocal genetic fingerprint of the source tree. By comparing the endocarp genotype against the complete set of genotypes of reproductive trees in the population, we could unambiguously identify the source tree for 82.1% of the seeds collected in seed traps and hypothesize that the remaining 17.9% of sampled seeds come from other populations. Identification of the source tree for Prunus mahaleb seeds dispersed by frugivores revealed a marked heterogeneity in the genetic composition of the seed rain in different microhabitats, with a range of 1-5 distinct maternal trees contributing seeds to a particular landscape patch. Within-population dispersal distances ranged between 0 and 316 m, with up to 62% of the seeds delivered within 15 m of the source trees. Long distance dispersal events, detected by the exclusion of all reproductive trees in the population, accounted for up to 17.9% of the seeds sampled. Our results indicate strong distance limitation of seed delivery combined with infrequent long-distance dispersal events, extreme heterogeneity in the landscape pattern of genetic makeup, and a marked mosaic of multiple parentage for the seeds delivered to a particular patch.  相似文献

We used parentage analysis to estimate seedling recruitment distances and genetic composition of seedling patches centred around reproductive trees of the animal-dispersed Neotropical canopy palm Iriartea deltoidea in two 0.5 ha plots within second-growth forest and one 0.5 ha plot in adjacent old-growth forest at La Selva Biological Field Station in north-eastern Costa Rica. Seedlings were significantly spatially aggregated in all plots, but this pattern was not due to dispersal limitation. More than 70 per cent of seedlings were dispersed at least 50 m from parent trees. Few seedlings were offspring of the closest reproductive trees. Seedling patches observed beneath reproductive trees originate from dozens of parental trees. Observed patterns of seedling distribution and spatial genetic structure are largely determined by the behaviour of vertebrate seed dispersers rather than by spatial proximity to parental trees.  相似文献
